Style Violation: The Golf Polo

Don’t be that guy.

As a veteran of American office space culture I’ve witnessed countless style atrocities. Over the years the one offense that seems to rear its head over and over again is the golf polo.

Golf polos (or other sweat collecting athletic shirts) have no business in the workplace (unless your name is Tiger Woods). Just because a shirt has a collar on it does not make it appropriate for casual Friday or your next blind date for that matter. A better alternative would be a clean , slim fitting polo with a minimal logo.

The Fix

  • The key here is to keep the cute little horses and alligators to a minimum.
  • Fit is crucial. The difference between cuts will make a huge difference. Stay away from tags like “traditional” or “classic” fit. Look for “modern” or “tailored” fits and you’ll be gold.
  •  Stripes or solids both work well.
  • Pair your polo with a pair of slim cut chinos or tailored shorts NOT baggy pleated pants or orphaned suit trousers.
  • Wear them with suede lace ups, drivers, sneakers, or bluchers NOT leather soled oxfords.
